Figurative

Through my work, I am exploring the emotional and physical connection that we have to our past, ourselves and the people who influence and inform the person that we become. Self-reflection, introversion and the ebb and flow that we experience in our day-to-day lives are things I wish to express through my figurative work, while simultaneously capturing the simple beauty found in the subtle and unconscious movements of the body.

Paper Stencil
I begin by creating a simple line drawing of a figure I wish to print. I then make a tracing of this drawing onto newsprint. Using a knife, I cut out the positive space of the figure, creating a paper stencil out of the negative space. This stencil is then layed on top of an inked lino plate which has the floral motif carved into it.

Paper Stencil – after going through press
The plate and stencil pass through the press with a sheet of wet printmaking paper. The ink is transferred onto the wet paper only in the positive cut-out areas of the stencil. Because of the unpredictable nature of the newsprint, sometimes ink will also seep through the negative areas of the newsprint stencil as well, creating little dots, blotches or blurred lines around the figure in interesting ways.

‘to twine with, about, around, or together’
Source material for the series “Entwined” was created by literally wrapping myself in the physical creations of women who are important to my life: my grandmother, mother and close female friends. Each piece of fabric was knit, wound and knotted by hands of those who love me. Objects created with purpose and intent are transformed through the process of image making, blurring the line between craft and art.
